In a landmark decision for infrastructure development in Rajasthan, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Airports Authority of India’s (AAI) proposal for the development of a Green Field Airport at Kota-Bundi. The project, estimated to cost ₹1507 crore, is expected to significantly boost regional connectivity, tourism, and economic growth in the Hadoti region of Rajasthan.
Land Allocation and Project Scope
The Government of Rajasthan has allocated 440.06 hectares of land to AAI for the construction of the new airport. The upcoming facility will be designed to accommodate A-321 type aircraft, positioning it as a modern aviation hub capable of handling both domestic and potential international operations in the future.
Key Features of the Kota-Bundi Greenfield Airport
The new airport will be developed with state-of-the-art infrastructure and passenger-friendly facilities, ensuring it meets international standards. Major features include:
- Terminal Building: A 20,000 sqm terminal capable of handling 1,000 passengers during peak hours and 2 million passengers annually.
- Runway: A 3200m x 45m runway, suitable for Code ‘D’ aircraft operations including Airbus A-321.
- Aircraft Parking Bays: Provision for 7 aircraft bays, ensuring adequate capacity for flight operations.
- Taxiways & Apron: Modern taxiway systems for efficient aircraft movement.
- Support Infrastructure: An Air Traffic Control (ATC) block, fire station, and car parking facilities for passengers and staff.
Current Limitations of Kota Airport
At present, Kota Airport offers only limited aviation facilities. The existing airport features a 1220m runway, suitable only for Code ‘B’ aircraft like Dornier DO-228, and a 400 sqm terminal building with a handling capacity of just 50 passengers during peak hours. This limited capacity has long been a bottleneck for the region’s connectivity and economic potential.
The approval for a Greenfield Airport addresses these limitations, bringing a modern aviation gateway that can accommodate growing air traffic and passenger demand.
Strategic Importance and Economic Impact
The development of the Kota-Bundi Airport is expected to have far-reaching benefits:
- Boost to Tourism: The Hadoti region, known for its historic sites, wildlife sanctuaries, and cultural heritage, will attract more domestic and international tourists.
- Economic Growth: Improved connectivity will support industries, agriculture, and trade, providing a boost to the local economy.
- Employment Opportunities: The construction and operation of the airport will generate direct and indirect jobs, supporting livelihoods in the region.
- Regional Connectivity: The new airport will enhance air travel options for Rajasthan, reducing dependence on distant airports like Jaipur and Udaipur.
The approval of the Green Field Airport at Kota-Bundi marks a transformative step in strengthening Rajasthan’s aviation infrastructure. With an investment of ₹1507 crore, advanced features such as a 20,000 sqm terminal, 3200m runway, and modern passenger facilities, the airport will significantly improve connectivity and unlock economic potential for the region.
By replacing the limited-capacity Kota Airport with a world-class aviation facility, the project reaffirms the government’s commitment to regional development, ease of travel, and economic empowerment under PM Narendra Modi’s vision for modern India.
