In a landmark move to transform Indian education, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has announced the digitisation of its entire curriculum in the KATBOOK format. This initiative will provide students with videos, animations, 3D simulations, and interactive tools, making learning more engaging and accessible.
The NCERT digital learning textbooks will also empower educators with AI-powered classroom tools, translators, dictionaries, and audiobooks, ensuring that quality resources are available across the country—even in offline mode. According to NCERT, this step will “simplify preparation and improve teaching delivery,” particularly benefiting rural and remote regions.
NCERT’s Digital Learning Initiative: Aligned with NEP 2020
The NCERT digital textbooks initiative is designed to support the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the Digital India Mission, aiming to create a more inclusive, accessible, and technology-driven education system. By leveraging KATBOOK, the project will integrate advanced learning technologies with the school curriculum, benefiting over 250 million students across India.
The pilot rollout of the initiative will begin in select states, with full-scale implementation planned within the next 18 months.
KATBOOK: Interactive and Immersive Digital Textbooks
The KATBOOK format is central to this initiative, offering a new era of interactive and immersive learning. Key features of the NCERT KATBOOK include:
- Multimedia content and 3D assets for better conceptual understanding
- Virtual labs and gamified learning experiences to make education fun and practical
- AI-driven applications and classroom tools to assist teachers in lesson delivery
- Built-in multilingual translator and search tools for accessibility across India’s diverse languages
- Clarification tools to resolve students’ doubts in real-time
- Personalisation features that adapt to individual learning needs
These features will help students learn better while giving teachers innovative resources to deliver lessons more effectively.
NCERT Partnership with UEducate Global
The initiative is being rolled out in collaboration with UEducate Global, a global EdTech leader. The agreement was formalised at the NCERT headquarters in New Delhi, with Aman Sharma, Secretary of NCERT, and Manpreet Chadha, Director of Global Strategic Partnerships at UEducate Global, signing the partnership. The event was attended by senior NCERT officials.
Speaking about the collaboration, Sarath Kakumanu, Founder and MD of UEducate Global, said:
“With KATBOOK, we will empower teachers, inspire students, and make learning more interactive, inclusive, multilingual, and impactful than ever before. This collaboration reflects our shared resolve to ensure that quality education reaches every child in India, no matter where they are.”
A Global-Scale EdTech Programme
With the scale of reaching 250 million students, the NCERT-UEducate partnership marks one of the largest EdTech programmes in the world. By digitising the curriculum, NCERT is ensuring that future generations of learners have access to world-class, technology-driven education, regardless of geography or socio-economic background.
The launch of NCERT’s KATBOOK digital textbooks is set to redefine school education in India. By combining AI-powered tools, multilingual support, gamified learning, and immersive content, NCERT and UEducate Global are building a future-ready education system. This initiative not only bridges the rural-urban divide but also positions India as a global leader in digital education innovation
