BSNL Launches 'Azadi Ka Plan' for Just Rs 1 Ahead of Independence Day

In a bold move to revive user interest and commemorate India’s Independence Day, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has launched a special promotional offer called the ‘Azadi Ka Plan’ priced at just Rs 1. Announced on July 31, 2025, via a post on platform X, BSNL described the plan as a way to “get true digital freedom,” highlighting the intent to provide affordable access to mobile services for all.

The Rs 1 plan is exclusively available to new users and offers impressive benefits:

  • Unlimited voice calling
  • 100 SMS per day
  • 2GB of high-speed data per day
  • 30-day validity
  • Free SIM card

This offer is valid for a limited period, from August 1 to August 31, 2025, aligning with the spirit of India’s 78th Independence Day celebrations. Interested individuals can avail the offer by visiting their nearest BSNL Customer Service Center (CSC) or authorised retailer.

The initiative is seen as BSNL’s attempt to both rebuild its customer base and offer an affordable entry point for users to experience its network. With growing competition from private telecom giants like Jio, Airtel, and Vi, BSNL’s pricing strategy under this campaign could potentially attract cost-conscious consumers, especially in rural and semi-urban areas.

However, the offer comes at a time when BSNL continues to face challenges in retaining subscribers. According to the latest Telecom Subscription Data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), BSNL lost 305,766 wireless subscribers in June 2025 alone. The total subscriber base now stands at 90,464,244, of which 29,822,407 are rural subscribers.

Despite these losses, BSNL’s aggressive pricing under the Azadi Ka Plan could be a strategic push to regain lost ground, particularly among first-time mobile users or those looking to try out an alternative operator at minimal cost.

As India moves further into the digital era, BSNL’s Rs 1 plan offers a symbolic yet impactful message: digital access should be a basic right, not a luxury. Whether this initiative translates into significant subscriber gains remains to be seen, but it certainly positions BSNL as a player still willing to innovate and compete.
