In a landmark event highlighting India’s global cultural diplomacy, a statue of Maharshi Valmiki, the revered Sanskrit poet and author of the epic Ramayana, was unveiled in Camporotondo, Italy. The ceremony, held under the aegis of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), is part of the Indian government’s initiative, “Connecting the World through Ramayana,” aimed at celebrating and sharing India’s ancient literary and spiritual heritage on the international stage.

The statue was jointly unveiled by Indian Ambassador to Italy, Vani Rao, and Mayor of Camporotondo, Massimiliano Micucci, in a ceremony attended by local dignitaries, members of the Indian diaspora, and representatives of the Balmiki community. Amararam Gurjar, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Rome, was also present, reflecting the Indian government’s high-level commitment to promoting cultural ties with Italy.

Maharshi Valmiki, venerated as the Adi Kavi or the first poet of Sanskrit literature, is credited with composing the Ramayana, one of India’s greatest epics that continues to inspire generations across the globe. His philosophical and moral teachings remain integral to Indian culture and are increasingly being recognized for their universal appeal.

Ambassador Vani Rao, in her address, highlighted the importance of cultural exchange in fostering deeper international understanding. “The Ramayana is not just a story—it is a reflection of values like righteousness, compassion, and devotion that transcend borders,” she said. “By honoring Maharshi Valmiki here in Italy, we celebrate our shared humanity and the power of literature to connect civilizations.”

Mayor Micucci expressed pride in Camporotondo hosting the statue and acknowledged the contribution of the Indian community in enriching local culture. He called the installation “a symbol of unity, diversity, and international friendship.”
