In a major move to revolutionize global digital transactions, PayPal, the USA-based payment giant, announced on 23 July 2025 the launch of a new cross-border payments platform named ‘PayPal World’. The platform is being developed in collaboration with India’s National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) International Payments Limited (NIPL) and other international payment providers to enhance convenience, interoperability, and scalability in international payments.
ABOUT ‘PAYPAL WORLD’
PayPal World is envisioned as a global payment hub, seamlessly connecting domestic payment systems, digital wallets, and currencies for real-time international transactions. In its first phase, PayPal has formed strategic partnerships with four key international payment providers:
- NIPL, the operator of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI)
- Mercado Pago from Brazil
- Tenpay Global (Weixin Pay) from China
- Venmo, PayPal’s own peer-to-peer payments subsidiary
GLOBAL UPI ACCEPTANCE
One of the most significant features of PayPal World is UPI integration for global transactions. This partnership enables Indian users to pay at international online merchants that accept PayPal using their UPI-linked bank accounts. This development expands UPI’s reach and usability, reinforcing India’s growing role in global fintech innovation.
CONSUMER AND MERCHANT BENEFITS
PayPal World offers localized support for digital wallets, currencies, and regional payment systems, making cross-border transactions smoother for users and businesses.
