CLAT 2026 Registrations to Begin from August 1: Exam Pattern, Eligibility and More

The Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) has officially announced the registration schedule for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2026, the gateway to undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) law programs offered by 24 participating NLUs and several other universities across India. The registration process will commence on August 1, 2025, and the last date to apply is October 31, 2025.

The CLAT 2026 examination is scheduled to be conducted on December 7, 2025, from 2 PM to 4 PM, in offline mode. The entrance test will assess candidates for admission into the five-year integrated LLB and one-year LLM programmes.

REGISTRATION PROCESS AND REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

Applicants can register for CLAT 2026 online through the official website of the Consortium of NLUs. During the registration process, candidates are required to:

  • Pay the application fee
  • Upload essential documents such as:
    • Recent passport-size photograph (front-facing, plain background)
    • Scanned signature
    • Valid category certificate (for SC, ST, or OBC candidates)
    • PwD certificate (if applicable)
    • Below Poverty Line (BPL) certificate (if claiming BPL status)

APPLICATION FEE STRUCTURE

The non-refundable application fee is:

  • ₹4,000 for General, OBC, and NRI candidates
  • ₹3,500 for SC, ST, BPL, and PwD candidates

In addition, candidates can purchase previous years’ CLAT question papers for ₹500. The consortium clarified that candidates will have to bear additional bank transaction charges, which will be shown on the payment gateway during the transaction.

CLAT 2026 EXAM PATTERN

CLAT UG 2026 will consist of 120 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), each carrying 1 mark. There is a negative marking of 0.25 marks for each incorrect response. The paper is divided into five sections: English Language, Current Affairs (including General Knowledge), Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, Quantitative Techniques

CLAT PG 2026 will assess candidates on core areas of law, including: Constitutional Law, Jurisprudence, Administrative Law, Law of Contract, Torts, Family Law, Criminal Law, Property Law, Company Law, Public International Law, Environmental Law, Tax Law, Labour and Industrial Law

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

CLAT UG 2026 Eligibility:

  • No upper age limit.
  • Candidates must have passed Class 12 or equivalent with at least 45% marks (40% for SC, ST, and PwD).
  • Students appearing in the 2026 board exams can also apply, provided they submit proof of qualification during the admission process.
