The Department of State Educational Research and Training (DSERT), Karnataka, has officially released the Bilingual Bridge Course Handbooks for the academic year 2025–26, targeting students from Classes 4 to 7. These handbooks encompass core subjects: Kannada, English, Hindi, Mathematics, Environmental Studies (EVS), Science, and Social Science, presented in both Kannada and English mediums
This initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, emphasizing multilingualism and inclusive education. By offering content in both Kannada and English, DSERT aims to strengthen foundational literacy and numeracy skills, facilitating smoother transitions between languages and enhancing comprehension.
Each handbook provides week-by-week learning objectives, activities, assessments, and project work for the entire academic year. Teachers are equipped with systematic guidance to organize lessons effectively, ensuring timely syllabus completion. The plans also incorporate remedial teaching, activity-based learning, and integration of ICT tools, promoting a child-centered educational approach.
Subjects like Mathematics and Science are detailed with visual and conceptual explanations in both languages, aiding students developing English proficiency. Language subjects focus on reading fluency, vocabulary development, and grammar through contextual learning strategies.

The bridge course includes pre-tests and post-tests to assess student progress, enabling teachers to identify learning gaps and tailor interventions accordingly. This approach empowers educators to address the unique learning needs of their students, especially in multilingual classrooms
School administrators, teachers, and academic coordinators across Karnataka are encouraged to download the year plans from the official DSERT Karnataka website and integrate them into their lesson planning from the beginning of the academic year. The bilingual model is expected to foster linguistic confidence, conceptual clarity, and academic consistency among primary and upper primary learners
The release of the 2025–26 Bilingual Bridge Course Handbooks marks a progressive step by DSERT Karnataka toward equitable, inclusive, and quality education for all children in the state.
